Art Tips for the beginning artist:
Color is made up of three dimensions:
- Hue is the color by its name. Red, yellow, blue, etc.
- Value is the lightness and darkness of a hue. Low value means the hue is dark and high value means the hue is light.
- Intensity is the brightness, or purity of the hue.
Color also has temperature. Colors that contain a yellowish hue are considered warm colors. Colors that contain a bluish hue are considered cool colors. This temperature depends on the balance of the hue mixtures in some colors, such as green or purple which each contain a warm and a cool hue.
TIP:   When trying to determine the value of the objects you are drawing or painting, it helps to squint your eyes to observe the setting. This will block out some of the color and help you to see more of the value changes in your arrangement or scene.
